Story
Very recently I was in this region of Nepal. I was deeply struck by the wonderful people, their extraordinary kindness, their fun, their care of nature, their toughness. But then this collapsed glacier and the ensuing horror flood wiping whole communities and villages from the face of the earth, and thousands upon thousands of families devastated in the most tragic way. And now they need help. A lot of help.
On 3rd October I will be running, walking, stumbling up and down the 17k and 1300m of Ben Nevis as part of the ROC Scotland race. It is not exactly the Himalayas but the highest we have in UK. The British Embassy in Kathmandu has pointed me towards the Red Cross Disaster Fund, and so it is to this fund I am asking you to donate what you can, with me, to do something to help.
Here's what the Red Cross say:
"Thousands of people including children are missing, over a thousand are dead and communities have been devastated after sudden flash floods struck Nepal's Rasuwa district on 26 August. The flooding, caused by a surge of water entering the Bhote Koshi River, swept through villages with little warning.
Families lost loved ones, homes and livelihoods in a matter of hours. Many people have been forced from their homes and are facing an uncertain future as search and rescue efforts continue.
As more communications are established with our teams on the ground, a clearer picture is emerging of the immense scale of damage and devastation caused to people’s lives."
