I am running the Brighton Marathon to raise funds for a charity that I have volunteered for and has helped many children and young people. The charity is Project for the Registration of Children as British Citizens (PRCBC).

PRCBC exist due to massive injustice in the current system which works against the interests of children dashing their hopes and denying them a sense of belonging in the country where they have lived all their lives.

The injustice arises because many children born in the UK, or in some cases children born outside the UK to a British parent, are not born British. This deprives them of important benefits such as educational or employment opportunities, student loans and health benefits. More importantly however, not having citizenship leaves children to "feel alienated, excluded, isolated, ‘second-best’, insecure and not fully assimilated into the fabric and social culture of the UK.“

Although many are *entitled* to become British if they meet certain criteria, they have to pay a substantial fee currently £1214 which is beyond the means of many. It has been conceded by the Home Office that only a small proportion of this fee covers the administrative cost of the application with the rest being profit.

PRCBC has been campaigning for many years to fight the injustice that exists through casework, advocacy and law reform through litigation.

Any funds you donate by sponsoring me will go to PRCBC's hardship fund, which is reserved for expenses directly incurred by children and young people in working to secure their citizenship rights. This can include miscellaneous expenses that may need to be incurred as part of the application process, including obtaining documents such as passport photos or birth certificates, expert reports, or even just travel expenses to attend meetings with their lawyer.
