In December 2019, my wee brother took his own life. He was 44 years old with three young children.

Dougie suffered from mental health issues for several years. Unlike most men he was open about his troubles, nevertheless they ultimately overcame him. Naturally, Dougie's family and numerous friends were devastated, he leaves a massive hole in many lives. Dougie was a force of nature; giving, caring, funny, loyal, moral but tragically he was in constant turmoil too.

I am endeavouring to play every golf course in Scotland, all 600 of them, from the legendary links to prosaic pitch and putts. It was never my intention to play them all but as I travel the length and breadth of Scotland, to the islands and to many fairways less trodden, Dougie is always at the forefront of my mind. I miss him. Dougie loved his golf too. I dearly wish we had the chance to play golf with each other again, to go on a road trip together, to be brothers.

Having played the top 100 and then top 200 Scottish courses, I am now at over 400 courses played. My quest to play every Scottish course is therefore dedicated as a tribute to Dougie's memory, and to raise funds for SAMH (Scottish Action for Mental Health) to try and prevent other kind souls like my brother from being lost forever.
