Access Sport is a registered charity. We make inclusion the norm by tackling the access barriers faced by disadvantaged and disabled young people, focussing on the causes of exclusion—not just the symptoms.

Story

Brixton BMX Club has been a beacon of hope and energy for local youth since its establishment in 1981. Founded to provide a much-needed outlet for children, the Club now boasts over 500 registered members from diverse backgrounds, with women and girls representing over 20% of our community.

BMX racing is unique in that it allows girls to compete alongside boys, often achieving remarkable success, it also provides an outlet for neurodiverse kids who sometimes struggle with the social demands of team sports. Our members range in age from 3 to 62, showcasing the inclusive spirit of our sport.

Since becoming an Olympic sport in 2008, BMX racing has inspired many young athletes, we are lucky that one of our coaches is a former Olympian who guides our riders towards their dreams. Our Club has seen participants excel at various levels, from local competitions to representing their country at the World Championships in Copenhagen this year.

We have continued to enhance Brixton BMX Track with vital upgrades—most recently a new start hill and improved drainage—we are now embarking on the next phase: replacing three berms, resurfacing and reshaping the track, and installing a new starting gate. This work is essential as our open-access track faces increasing demands from our growing community. Once completed, we aim to host a regional race in 2026 for the first time since 2008!

As an enthusiastic member of this vibrant community and Vice Chairman of the Club, I am committed to raising funds for these crucial improvements. My dedicated colleagues have joined me in taking on a personal challenge: completing a Marathon distance relay race during our workday on Wednesday 8th October, with each team member running 5 km.

In addition to our efforts, my employer has generously pledged to match any funds raised up to £30,000. The total cost for the track works and new gate is £80,000; therefore, if we can raise £30,000 then Marex will match £30,000 and the Club can cover £20,000 from existing funds. Any additional contributions will go towards purchasing new bikes and equipment which are both sorely needed.
