Story

Hi everyone! My name is Dominic. I am an undergraduate student at Oxford, studying Ancient and Modern History. Most of my days are spent crouched over a book, lost somewhere between the rise of Rome and the Cold War. When I get the chance to emerge from my academic cave, I love visiting historical sites across the globe and seeing the places I’ve spent so long reading about come to life. That being said, my curiosity doesn’t stop at ancient cities where civilisations first took shape — I’m equally fascinated by natural wonders that have been around long before humans started making history.

This is why I have chosen to challenge myself mentally and physically and embark on my biggest quest yet- climbing Africa’s mightiest mountain, Kilimanjaro. I will be doing this to raise £4,970 for Amnesty International UK, a Nobel Peace Prize winning charity for human rights. Amnesty fights against political injustice and actively campaigns for everyone’s freedoms of speech and expression, as well as the right to protest.

Coming from a family where multiple generations have fought against tyranny, starting with my great grandparents serving the Dutch Resistance during the Second World War, I feel strongly motivated to combine the adventure of climbing Kilimanjaro with raising funds for the preservation of humanity’s freedoms the world over. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro will be a tough but rewarding challenge — a bit like if Sisyphus finally managed to get the boulder to the top. Unlike him, though, I fully intend to stay there long enough to enjoy the view.

Please support me in this journey - your contribution will not only help me achieve a personal goal, but also provide meaningful support to those facing persecution and political injustice around the world.

Thank you for your support,

Dominic
