Story

The Who: Dominic Simpson & Richard Hollins (AKA Dick & Dom).

The What: 100km Ultra Challenge.

The Where: Peak District, a continuous 100km run/jog/walk through the national park.

The When: Saturday the 6th July 2024.

The Why: This year I've been able to take on a weekly volunteering role with Winston's Wish. The role involves providing bereavement support via the Winston's Wish national helpline. My motivation for doing this is fuelled by my own experience of grief as a child when my brother, Paul, died when I was 9 years old. I volunteer in hope of being able to help other people to not go through the same experiences as I did.

Each volunteer at Winston's Wish is assigned a buddy to remotely support them and it is my great fortune to have Jemma as my buddy. Jemma has been a constant source of support as I transitioned into the role and always on hand with encouragement and guidance. I learnt that Jemma also lost her sibling, Jen, leaving behind 3 young children. I also learnt that Jemma and her family set up their own charity to provide better access to the help, advice and support that children and their families need in such dark days.

Jen's Special Place is a child bereavement support group based in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire. The group ultimately aims to support children in expressing their grief and exploring their feelings in a safe and emphatic environment; enabling them to grow through each others experiences. Parents and carers also benefit from our service; offering group adult counselling and an opportunity to speak with others in similar circumstances

The charity's current goal is have a premises to call home, their own 'special place' to grow the service from. The charity has been running from a local community centre but having their own building will mean the children and young people accessing their support can make it their own.

Now I may not actually have ever been to Scunthorpe, but I know the importance of a local service like Jen's Special Place. This is the inspiration to put ourselves through a 100km challenge and if we can raise any funds towards Jemma's dream of having a place of their own then it would be a cause worth the pain and blisters.
