Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

With recent news of my friend, George, developing Leukaemia (the most common blood cancer developed in teens) I figured that I must do something to not only support him but teenagers across the country who have also found themselves diagnosed with this awful disease. With this in mind I am planning on shaving my head and taking part in the 125 mile Devizes to Westminster Kayak race in his name.

George is 17, soon to be 18 so was hit with this devastation at a pivotal point in his life. He has a lot going for him and will frequently be described by friends as funny, intelligent and genuine. No one should ever have to enter adulthood whilst undertaking a lengthy process of chemotherapy, and sadly George is by no means the only teenager to run into this awful situation. Everyday seven 13-24 year olds will receive the news that they have cancer. The Teenage Cancer Trust do an amazing job in donating to hospitals and running trips for teenagers who have unfairly ended up having to receive unsettling treatment for the disease. Their endless and selfless support should never go unnoticed.

To show my support towards this cause I will be shaving my head to highlight this issue and persuade as many people that they should donate towards this cause as well as letting George know that he isn’t alone during these times, I hope all reading this will help me and all of George’s friends in supporting him. I will also be competing in the Devizes to Westminster kayak race in his name. This is a 125-mile kayak race over the course of 4 days. This ultramarathon is extremely demanding and requires a lot of physical and mental endurance, with this in mind I am hoping it will allow me to show more empathy in understanding the suffering that George is going through. In reality my experience will not even scrape the surface in relation to what George and others go through, however I hope it successfully raises awareness of the issue and persuades many to go and show him their support.

I really hope anyone viewing this page will gladly take 2 minutes of their time to donate whatever they can to support both George’s case and other cases like his across the country.
