An inspiring initiative has been running for the past 15 months in Cairo, as the Hands Up Project (HUP) opened a dedicated educational space for Palestinian children who have escaped Gaza.

The Hands Up Project, a UK-based charitable trust, connects children across the globe with young people in Palestine. Through a network of passionate volunteers, the project uses online interactions, drama, and storytelling to foster creativity, self-expression, and English language development. These skills not only open doors to future opportunities but also encourage mutual understanding and personal growth.

Over the past 3 years, more than 100,000 Palestinians have escaped into Egypt, many of them children who have lost access to a full year of education. While live streamed online classes from the West Bank offer crucial support, there’s a growing need for more. The Hands Up Project provides free in-person English, Arabic and Maths to help children build skills, improve their chances of pursuing education in Palestine or abroad. We provide psychosocial support for our students and teachers, through outdoor activities, away days and counselling. We now offer art & music therapy to improve the mental health of our HUP family.

With your support—whether large or small—we can maintain our vital activities at our small homely space in Cairo, where we create a welcoming environment where students come to learn. We provide essential learning materials, refreshments, and snacks, ensuring that all children, regardless of their financial situation, can benefit from this Palestinian-led, completely free initiative. Together, we can offer these children hope, skills, and a brighter future.

Our breakdown of costs for one month:

Two English teachers, one art therapy teacher, one Arabic teacher, one Maths teacher & one young learner teacher = 100, 100 EGP

Rent: 14,200 EGP

Internet - 1700 EGP

Water - 3200 EGP

General school maintenance, educational material and curriculum printing costs: 13,000

Extracurricular activities: 5,000 EGP

Palestinian Director costs: 35, 000 EGP

Total monthly cost = 172, 200 EGP or approx £3,000 GBP
