Story

It feels a little surreal to put this out there, but next Sunday, I’ll be running the Royal Parks Half Marathon in honour of my husband, Gareth. As many of you know, Gareth passed away suddenly in June 2022, a devastating loss that shattered our world. The last two years have been a journey for both myself and our two children, and while we’re still on that path, we’re learning to live again.

If you knew Gareth, you’ll know he was an incredibly talented sportsman, and honouring him through sport is something he would have wholeheartedly embraced. He was also one of the kindest souls, always going the extra mile for others.

In the aftermath of his passing, I was in autopilot mode, focused on shielding and supporting our children. The school they attend offered counselling through the charity Place2Be. Their help has been a lifeline, giving my children the tools and safe space they needed to process their grief. While they may never fully understand why their Daddy isn’t here, they’ve discovered their own strength, and I couldn’t be prouder of them. Grief will always be part of their lives, but they’ve shown remarkable resilience, and I’m so lucky to have two incredible young humans by my side.

Last year, I ran my first half marathon in Gareth’s memory, and this year, I’m doing it again.

This time, I’d like to raise money for Place2Be in Gareth’s name. The support they provide to children facing grief is invaluable, and I’ll be forever grateful for the role they’ve played in our lives. I also want to raise awareness for this wonderful charity, who have not only helped my children but also so many others find their feet when their world has been turned upside down by loss. It’s important we continue to normalise conversations around grief, so that no one feels alone in their journey.
