I’m Climbing Kilimanjaro (Even Though I Hate Hills!) — Please Support Our Emergency Department
This September, I’ll be taking on the challenge of a lifetime: climbing Mount Kilimanjaro — Africa’s highest peak — to raise money for my second home, East Cheshire Emergency Department.
I’ve worked in our ED for 25 years, and it truly holds my heart. For the past 9 years, I’ve focused full-time on teaching and development, helping our incredible staff grow in skill and confidence. It’s something I’m passionate about, because when we support our staff, our patients benefit too.
The ED is more than just a workplace — it’s a place full of strength, compassion and care.
This climb is not just a personal challenge (did I mention I really don’t like hills, mountains or the cold?) — it’s a way to give back. I’m raising money to improve training resources, equipment, and opportunities for staff development. This could mean new kit for simulation training, or offering places on valuable courses that staff wouldn’t normally be able to access.
I’m also climbing Kilimanjaro in memory of my mum. I’m doing this in memory of my wonderful mum. She would have been incredibly proud (and slightly horrified!) to see me take on something like this. I can just imagine her telling everyone about it with a big smile on her face, while also quietly worrying about every step I take. I’ll be carrying her memory with me every step of the way — especially in the hardest moments. This climb is for her.
As I climb towards the summit of Kilimanjaro, I’ll be thinking of my mum — and hoping to make her proud.
💙 Every penny raised will go directly to benefit both staff and patients in our department.
I have paid for the trip myself. So all money raised goes directly to the charity fund
If you’re able to donate, however big or small, I would be so grateful. If you can’t contribute financially, your support and encouragement will mean the world — I think I’m going to need it!
Thank you so much,
Donna
