On Sunday 26 April 2026, I’ll be running the London Marathon in support of UNIQUE, the Rare Chromosome Disorder Support Group. This is a charity that is very close to my heart. It will be my first ever marathon, and I am aiming to complete it in under four hours.

UNIQUE has supported my family for many years and has been there throughout my brother Joe’s life. Joe was born with a very rare chromosome deletion, specifically 46xy 8p minus 23.1 pter de novo. He was the first person in the UK to be diagnosed with this particular chromosome disorder, over 31 years ago. It is entirely random, and support like UNIQUE provides can make a life changing difference.

The deletion affected Joe in various ways and resulted in many visits to London hospitals during his early life, including several life saving operations. During those years, having a passionate, caring, and informative charity to turn to was incredibly reassuring for our whole family.

Today, Joe is 31 and enjoying life in good health. He takes part in various clubs, works, and volunteers, and continues to live a full and active life.

UNIQUE is a small charity based locally to us in Oxted, Surrey. They are passionate about supporting families affected by rare chromosome disorders and about educating professionals as well as families, helping to improve understanding, care, and long term outcomes.

Because UNIQUE is a small charity, every donation truly goes a long way. Even a modest contribution helps them continue their vital work supporting families like mine.

Running a marathon is a huge personal challenge for me, but it feels incredibly meaningful to do it for a cause that has given so much to my family.
