Story
Last year, I took on a bike ride in memory of our little boy, Dylan. This year, yes you've guessed it, I’m doing it again!
In March 2024, we lost Dylan during the pregnancy. Though we had been told early on that he was likely to have Down syndrome, it didn’t take long for us to know how deeply we loved him and began to prepare ourselves for the journey ahead.
At just five months, Dylan was born sleeping, but in his short life he changed ours and he opened my eyes to Down syndrome, revealing my own ignorance but providing me the opportunity to reflect and change my way of thinking.
There are still so many outdated misconceptions about Down syndrome, shaped by a time when support was limited and inclusion wasn’t a priority. But the world is changing. Today, more and more people with Down syndrome are being seen and given the chance to thrive.
One organisation helping to drive this change is the Down Syndrome Research Foundation UK (DSRFUK). Their work is vital in helping ensure people with Down syndrome live longer, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.
To honour Dylan, and to support DSRFUK, I’ll once again be cycling from Guildford to Brighton along the Downs Link.
I’ll be doing this ride regardless but if you’re able to support the cause, every penny will go to helping a community that now holds a very special place in my heart.
About DSRFUK:
Our vision is a world where all people with Down syndrome live a long, healthy and happy life. We understand the challenges that people with DS can face with their health, life expectancy and quality of life. However, we believe people with DS are part of a diverse and exciting group and we are yet to discover the true depths of their potential.
Thank you. 💙
