Story
This February, I’m taking part in Move 28 Minutes a Day to raise funds for the National Autistic Society.
I’m doing this not just as a GP, but as a mum.
My daughter is AUHD (autistic and ADHD). Every day, she navigates a world that isn’t designed with her sensory needs, communication style, or nervous system in mind. Things many of us take for granted — noise, crowds, transitions, unpredictability — can be overwhelming and exhausting for her.
Movement has become one of our most important tools.
Walking, gentle exercise, being outdoors, moving her body in ways that feel safe and regulating — these aren’t about fitness goals. They’re about emotional regulation, mental health, and resilience. Movement helps her reset, process the world, and feel grounded. And as her mum, it helps me too.
As a GP, I see every day how under-supported autistic people and their families still are — in healthcare, education, and the community. As a parent, I feel this personally.
That’s why this challenge matters to me.
By moving for 28 minutes a day throughout February, I’m honouring:
• autistic children who work twice as hard to be understood
• parents quietly adapting every day
• and the importance of services, advocacy, and research that truly support autistic people across their lifespan
Every donation, no matter how small, helps the National Autistic Society continue their vital work — from guidance and support for families, to campaigning for better understanding and inclusion.
Thank you for supporting us, for reading our story, and for helping create a kinder, more accessible world.
