Story
DSA's goal is to raise $20,000 for the AHNCI Wig Program. To kick-off the campaign, DSA has donated $2,500. Please join us if this cause speaks to you and you are able to contribute. Thank you for the consideration!
Allegheny Health Network's Cancer Institute (AHNCI) is committed to holistic care, supporting the whole person – not just the disease. That's why they provide free wigs to anyone diagnosed with cancer, regardless of whether they are an AHN patient or treated elsewhere. In 2024, they expanded their wig program to offer wigs for all genders, races, ethnicities, and hair textures – a commitment recognized by Highmark's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Division for breaking down barriers to care. They offer appointments at 7 convenient salon locations and a virtual option for those who live far away or do not feel well enough to travel.
Cancer treatment often causes hair loss, a deeply distressing side effect that impacts patients' emotional well-being. Providing a free, high-quality wig helps patients maintain dignity and sense of normalcy during this challenging time. With thousands of new cancer diagnoses in our region this past year, the need is significant. Many patients cannot afford the cost of a quality wig alongside their already substantial medical expenses. Your donation can make a profound difference, offering comfort and hope while helping alleviate their stress with the goal of fostering a more positive outlook during treatment.
Allegheny Health Network Cancer Institute Integrative Oncology Wig Program: 2024 Impact
The Allegheny Health Network Cancer Institute’s (AHNCI) Integrative Oncology Program provides comprehensive support to complement conventional cancer care. In 2024, the program served 513 patients, offering resources to enhance their treatment experience. A key component of this program is a free wig program available to all cancer patients, regardless of treatment location.
AHNCI Wig Program Highlights:
Demand: Of the 513 patients who contacted the program, 226 needed and requested a wig.
Cancer Types: The largest portion of wig recipients (45%) were breast cancer patients, followed by lung (9%), ovarian (6%), and other cancers including uterine, pancreatic, colon, endometrial, brain, lymphoma, and others (each account for 3% or less, totaling 40%).
Program Growth: The AHNCI Wig Program experienced a 48% increase in utilization compared to 2023.
Wig Value: Each wig provided has a retail value ranging from $300 to $1,000, depending on style and length. Wigs are given to patients at no cost. At each wig fitting appointment, the patient is not only given a wig, but amenities to care for their wig and extend the use and wear of it.
Inclusivity: The program is inclusive and serves all genders, races, and ethnicities.
Your generous donation will directly fund the purchase of high-quality wigs and supplies to extend their longevity, supporting cancer patients through treatment and into survivorship.
