The Freemen of Durham City with its tradition and values, historically provided benevolence to those within the community of Durham who fell on hard times. During the 20th century with the introduction of social change the support of the Freemen became largely redundant. The Charitable Trust was established in January 2015, initially to reinstate and formalise elements of Freemen’s traditional values and particularly for those more vulnerable in our community whose work is negatively impacted by the current economic climate. Since the Charitable Trust was established it has supported by donation to over 30 vulnerable groups and worthy causes within Durham: • Downs Syndrome North East. • Solan Connor Fawcett Cancer Trust. • Tin-Arts: Supports young people with learning difficulties through dance. • Durham County Stroke Club. • St Margaret’s Centre: Provides activities and training for adults requiring support with their mental Wellbeing. • LionMouth Rural Centre: Promotes wellbeing of the vulnerable in our community through the provision of meaningful, practical and creative activities. • Durham Area Disability Leisure Group: Provides support for disabled children and their families. Your donations will ensure the work of the Charitable Trust continues to support those most vulnerable within the Durham Community.
