Story

Pakistan is currently experiencing the worst natural disaster in over a decade.

The most current reports indicate over 1000 people have lost their lives.

Thirty million people have been affected by the floods, many have lost homes and livestock.

The problem is predicted to get worse as a stronger downpour approaches. Those who have gone to higher ground will be much more at risk if they dont have access to emergency medical care, food, clean water and proper shelter.

We are the Senior Student Leadership Team and we want to let you know about our school challenge called ‘Make the Minutes Matter’ which starts on Monday. We were all moved by the tragic events over the last few weeks in Pakistan and decided to launch a whole school challenge to raise money for areas that have been devastated by the large and destructive floods.

The ‘Make the Minutes Matter’ challenge asks staff and students to complete over the week of the 26-30 September a total of 173,000 minutes of exercise. We chose this figure as it is the time it would take to walk from Durrington High School to Islamabad (Pakistan’s capital city), and back. If every member of Team Durrington completes a minimum of 100 minutes of exercise over the week, we will be able to successfully complete our aspirational challenge. The track will be open from 7.45 -8.30 every morning and after school from 3.15-4.15, where students can run, walk or jog to clock their minutes. There will also be fitness sessions put on and run by staff from 8-8.30 every morning, which are open to all abilities and are a brilliant way to start the day.

All the money raised will go towards providing support and relief to the people of Pakistan affected by the floods.
