Story
Hi, my name is Iain Moncrieff.
Everyone calls me E.
Less than a year ago I tragically lost my wife (Lisa 40) and daughter (Rosie 8) within the space of three months.
Rosie was born with a rare genetic condition that made her muscles severely weak. She could only move her right arm from the elbow down against gravity. Her muscles were so weak she struggled to even cough or swallow.
We fed her through a tube into her stomach and she would regularly collapse her lungs and spend time in intesive care from nothing more than a common cold. She required round the clock care every day.
She was an incredible little girl and was loved by everyone who met her. She was so clever, talented and funny. She was an amazing painter and singer. Her dream was to be a singer.
My beautiful wife Lisa was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer in September 21. At that point Rosie was 7 years old, and we had recently had a little boy (Reggie) who was just one month away from his 2nd birthday.
Lisa sadly passed away in September 22 almost exactly one year after her diagnosis. She had fought so hard to stay for the children and me. She never complained....not once. She is my hero.
Just two and a half months after Lisa died, in December 22 Rosie had caught a number of virus's at once and was taken into picu at the Bristol childrens hospital.
Three days later she collapsed both lungs and went into respiratory arrest. The amazing doctors and physios at the hospital fought to revive her before calling me at 08:00 in the morning to say that they would need to stop trying. Amazingly she pulled through just after they hung up the phone. She spent six weeks fully concious and intubated with a machine breathing for her. Her bravery was beyond words.
Unfortunately her lungs were too damaged for her to survive without unsustainable amounts of respiratory physio each day and a machine to breathe for her.
She fought so hard....we all did.
On the 15th of January 2023 they took the tube out and I held Rosie as she passed away.
Through all of this there was one thing that kept me going.
My love for music.
I've been a proffesional musician for large chunks of my life, but with the situation I found myself in it was proving impossible.
My brother (Gray) and myself are a dark swamp blues band called Dusk Brothers (based in Bristol)
Instead of giving up we rolled up our sleeves and built a high quality streaming studio so we could continue to play for people.
With Lisa and Rosie's help (and so many other people) we managed to do the live stream we call 'The Dusk Brothers Show' every Friday during these incredibly difficult times.
We're now approaching our 100th episode and a year on from Lisa's death we wanted to do something to make Lisa and Rosie proud, and to remember them.
Lisa was an amazing woman who loved taking on challenges to raise money for charity. She climbed Mt Kilimanjaro to raise money for muscular dystrophy uk.
There was one charity who raised money for our family after hearing about Lisa's diagnosis. The charity is called 52 lives.
They raise money every week for a person or family in desperate need.
They raised thousands of pounds for Rosie. She sadly died before I could use the money to do something special for her.
We used some of the money raised to pay for her send off. It was an unforgettable event held at Clevedon Castle. The outpouring of love for Rosie was incredible and the final thing we did was to play a recording she'd taken of herself singing on her i-pad.....the applause and cheers when it finished were so loud it echoed accross the entire town of Clevedon.
I felt very strongly that the rest of the money raised should be used to change someone's life. I saw a post on Facebook where a mother was desperately trying raise money to fund a power chair for her little boy. I contacted her, and 52 lives kindly agreed that the money could go to them. Her little boy (Arthur) now has his first power chair thanks to the money raised to change Rosies life, which is just amazing.
On Friday October 6th my brother and I will be putting on the 100th live streamed Dusk Brothers show in conjunction with, and to raise money for the incredible 52 lives charity. Our goal is to raise £5,200 so that we can kick start every 52 lives campaign for an entire year with £100.
