Dundee University Weightlifting Club is raising money for Maggie’s, a charity providing expert care and support to people with cancer and their families. Maggie’s offers free and informal support with no appointment needed, through their centres across the UK. As an independent charity, Maggie’s relies on fundraising and donations to continue their important work.

Our weightlifting coach, Steven McCready, was recently diagnosed with a grade 4 glioblastoma. This is an aggressive and incurable brain tumour, with an average life expectancy of 12-18 months. Having first undergone brain surgery at Ninewells Hospital, he received the news that this was not enough to stop the cancer. Steven enjoys life as much as he can while receiving ongoing chemotherapy and having recently finished six weeks of radiotherapy at Ninewells Hospital to prolong his life. Maggie’s Dundee has provided immense support to Steven during the process of coming to terms with his diagnosis, attending his treatment and on life going forward. His wife, Emma, has also received support along with the rest of his family from Maggie’s staff and volunteers.

Since receiving his diagnosis and while undergoing treatment, Steven has continued to coach our weightlifting club. His extremely passionate and friendly approach during this time has not changed – a clear demonstration of his strong character.

To raise money on behalf of Steven, Dundee University Weightlifting Club will be running a week-long squat challenge for Maggie’s in January. This will involve club members collectively squatting 100 tonnes as we #squatforsteven.
