Story
Hello, thank you for visiting my fundraising page!
I am Dylan, a 22-year-old French and Economics student at the University of Warwick, currently working as an English teacher in a French primary school. This summer, I am volunteering in Ghana as a Mathematics teacher as part of the Warwick in Africa programme.
Warwick in Africa is an initiative focused on improving education in economically disadvantaged areas of Africa, currently operating in Ghana and South Africa. The programme places particular emphasis on Mathematics and English, recognising these as key subjects that can empower students and help break the cycle of poverty. In addition to supporting students, the programme is also committed to offering assistance to local teachers, aiming to create a lasting and meaningful impact within schools and the wider community.
Below, are some highlights of the programme to date:
96% of learners taught directly by our Volunteer Teachers find Maths and English easier Maths test results improve from 35% to 53%
605,000 learners have benefitted from teaching since 2006
English test results improve from 45% to 66%
2,929 Africa teachers have been trained
It costs less than £10 to teach a child for one month
Over 600 Volunteer Teachers have given their time and skills, many for more than one year
We currently work in 26 African schools
74% of Volunteer Teachers plan to train to become teachers following their placement
Fundraising in France (where I am currently working as a teacher on a placement year) has not proved to be overly fruitful, hence I have placed all my eggs in one basket, with a Hail Mary. An ultramarathon in Richmond Park, running laps of the park until my fundraising goal is reached, or until sunset (I am sure you can imagine which result I am hoping for).
Teaching really does shape the future for children. Your money will definitely make a difference, and more importantly, to people who will really benefit from it.
Any support will be hugely appreciated by myself and more importantly my legs, but is unquestionably going to a massively valuable cause.
Many, many thanks for your time.
Dylan x
