Story

Hello, thanks for visiting this page. I'm Eamonn and I'm competing in my first ever Ironman event in aid of the charity Doctors in Distress. Your support will help to raise loads of cash for this really important charity, and motivate me as I attempt to train through the bleak winter months.

I'm taking part in the Bolton 70.3 triathlon on June 8th 2025, a week before my 55th birthday.

Bolton 70.3 is a half-Ironman event (a.k.a. Ironman 70.3) comprising a 1.2 mile lake swim, 56-mile bike ride, and a half marathon (13.1 miles, for a total distance of 70.3 miles). Each leg is about twice the distance of the version in the olympics. Worse still, the bike leg involves two category four climbs, with a total ascent of over 2700 feet, and the half marathon is also on the hilly side.

Bolton 70.3 is regarded as one of the tougher UK half-Ironman events and is an official qualifier for the World Championships. Not getting my hopes up for that though - survival is my goal!

I've done a few crazy things over the years in the name of fund raising, including stand-up comedy in front of live audience whilst dressed as an alien, and participating in the North East Skinny Dip. But this one definitely scares me the most.

Doctors in Distress is a charity that is close to my heart, and is doing great work. It works to reduce stigma in the medical profession around mental health. It provides faciliated support groups for all medical professionals to prevent the worsening of issues related to mental health and it enables each participant to share their experiences and support their peers.

I will aim to include regular updates to this page on the highs and lows of my training, all the way through to race day. Any donation you can make to Doctors in Distress will be very welcome and much appreciated.

Thanks for your support!
