Cornwall Banger Rally Challenge · 21 September 2024

It is our aim to raise funds to assist in the treatment and care of teenagers and young people under the age of 24, within Cornwall and The Isles of Scilly, primarily for those undergoing and having had cancer and leukaemia treatment.

Story

Throughout our lives we have always supported different charities and events, but never done anything crazy. So, when one fine day, we came across Cornwall Banger Rally Challenge, we immediately knew it’s for us.

7 countries in 7 days with a car that’s either £1000 or less in value, or 15 years old. We hope, we will complete it in one piece.

Our chosen charity is Larf Cornwall cancer charity that aims to improve facilities and increase support for teens and young adults facing cancer.

2,555 teenagers and young adults are diagnosed with cancer every year, that’s 7 every day. More than 80% of those who are diagnosed beat cancer. Sadly, Lauren and Rosie were not part of that 80% but their positivity and attitude throughout their fight left behind a legacy, and inspired their parents to set up the LARF cancer charity. A very local charity with families based Penzance and Truro.

LARF, standing for Lauren and Rosie’s Fund, was set up in 2010 by the girls’ parents, who’d met each other throughout their daughters’ treatment. Lauren and Rosie’s friendship and ability to stay positive in the face of adversity led to the parents teaming up to start LARF, not only to honour their memories but also to help those who are in the same situation in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

A lot have been done, but nowhere near enough when it comes to treatment and support for young people. The long-term aim is to raise funds continually, to enable Royal Cornwall Hospital Treliske to have specialist trained medical and psychiatric staff to support individuals undergoing cancer or leukaemia treatment, either within a hospital environment or as outreach community support.
