Campaign to support community volunteers and students in Kenya with books and bookshelves!

We connect, train and equip educational 'catalysts' to drive community-led change, through the creation and local management of 42 inclusive and sustainable education centres.

Story

This photo shows the amazing Baidli Zone community library in Mukuru Kwame Reuben Slum, affected by flooding. It needs support with raising the floor to avoid this situation, and enable learners to use the space.

For some years, EduSpots has supported two remarkable projects in Kenya: The Badili Zone organisation in Mukuru Kwa Reuben Slum in Nairobi, and the MASH foundation project near Joska. Through our model, change is led and sustained by the communities, for the communities.

The EduSpots' Chair is out in Kenya until the 22nd, and it would be amazing to raise up to £1000 in this week to enable us to buy text books and local storybooks to fill bookshelves HERE AND NOW and avoid bank transfer costs later.

Please consider a donation, however small, to these remarkable projects making a real impact on learners' lives. Note that UK taxpayers can claim gift aid on this site, leading to 25% extra added to your donation.

Please mark MASH or BADILI in comments if you would rather your donation supports a particular project.

Nairobi Spot (Badili Zone Organisation)

Badili Zone Organisation was founded by the inspiring Claris Nadini when she was just 13 years old. She wanted to enable students younger than her to access books, and so set up a small community library in Mukuru Kwa Reuben Slum in Nairobi. The Slum has over 700,000 people, with more than 18 schools but only 2 that have almost fully equipped libraries that students from other schools don't have access to.

Since this point, through her committed leadership and her team's efforts she has managed to gain a new site with computers and many more books and textbooks. She is looking to further expand the project, and you call follow their work on Twitter here.

The library currently has a serious issue with flooding and they need urgent support in raising the floor to prevent the library being accessible in the rainy seasons.

Joksa Spot (MASH Foundation)

The MASH Foundation in Joska is a small foundation set up by Tina and Charles Maichera to promote literacy and offer mentorship to underserved students. They have set up a remarkable small community next to their house, which offers free book, IT training, puppet shows, mentorship and so much more to students across Joska.

Not satisfied with impacting students in Joska, they devised a satellite library system, sharing their books with 5 schools in Joska and Muranga county, enabling schools without any books at all to have their first book shelf created - often in a cupboard or a single bookshelf, but hugely valued and used by the schools.

How will your funding be spent?

All funding donated on this page will be spent on supporting Joksa and Nairobi Spots with the following:

Want to know more about EduSpots?

EduSpots is an educational movement which connects, trains, and equips local community volunteers (teachers, students and community members from the community) to drive the creation of sustainable educational projects. Our vision is of a world in which communities unite to create the future they want to see, with our motto #OurCollectiveFuture.

Since 2015, we have supported 300 educational catalysts to create transformational education opportunities for over 15,000 students in 50 communities across Ghana and Kenya, through the creation of education spaces named 'Spots' which are owned and led by the communities.

We run programmes in basic project management (SpotOps), literacy development (EduLit), early years (EduKidz), practical STEM and environmental education (EcoSTEM), and girls' empowerment (Ignite Girls). All training is led by our staff of 16 part-time experienced and passionate Ghanaian staff, many of whom have experience of running and volunteering at our Spots themselves.
