Story
Wow! This is the reaction of many of our visitors when they first see this marvellous building. It’s a wildly eclectic jumble of Moorish, Italian, Gothic and other styles that dazzle and excite the eyes. The interior is acoustically excellent, a great concert venue for both performing and recording and also a suitable space for exhibitions, small conferences and lectures. Listed as Grade 1 it is just over 150 years old and now needs major restoration.
To complicate matters, the congregation is declining and so is our income and our insurance and energy bills are growing. The trustees who run the building as a registered charity recognise that its religious use is diminishing and are seeking to expand the existing programme of events, tours and inter-faith activities to promote more understanding and tolerance, with the help of a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to give it a new life. Whilst we are preparing the grant bid we need financial help to tide us over.
We are aiming to raise £165,000:
Please can you help?
These are examples of some of the current bills that we are facing:
• £75,000 to repair the leaking annex roof
• £36,000 annual buildings and contents insurance
• £25,000 for a Building Condition Survey to accurately assess what is wrong with the building and what it would cost to put it right, to help us prepare part of the Heritage Lottery Fund bid.
• £16,000 for a new fire alarm system
• £5,000 to address electrical maintenance issues
• £5,000 to address a dry rot incident
• £750 to repair the Victorian clock in the main prayer hall
If you can contribute in any way, even a little bit every month, we would be most grateful for your help to preserve this magnificent Liverpool gem.
