Marathon fundraiser for the Grassmarket Community Project, Edinburgh

Edward Wells is raising money for Grassmarket Community Project

Edinburgh Marathon 2026 · 24 May 2026 ·

At the Grassmarket Community Project our mission is to create an inclusive person-centred environment where people feel empowered to develop skills, build positive relationships and enjoy an ongoing sense of belonging.

Story

The Grassmarket Community Project (GCP) provides sanctuary and support to over 500 community members at the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town. The GCP alleviates complex social problems, from homelessness to poverty alleviation, substance misuse, physical abuse and more.

Steeped in history, the charity's community space on Candlemaker Row fosters a person-centred environment, empowering people with an ongoing sense of belonging and engagement through education, mentorship and support.

As students in Edinburgh, we have a responsibility to our local communities. Since 2022, I have had the privilege of volunteering with the GCP's weekly Open-Door-Meal program. Every Wednesday afternoon, the charity caters for over 50+ members, providing multiple courses of food with open arms for anyone in the local community. This project remains a lifeline to people dealing with homelessness and destitution. Watching members' faces light up over a warm meal and genuine conversation has shown me the profound impact of simple human dignity and connection.

As one member shared:

I needed the services when I was at rock bottom with my mental health, with nowhere to go. It really saved my life. I value what they do so much that I now volunteer with them to make sure others get the support they need. I have made new friends as well as learned new skills. They are angels.

The scale of this impact is remarkable - in 2024 alone, over 8,639 community meals were served by GCP's incredible volunteer base, supporting hundreds of people across Edinburgh.

As the cost of living crisis deepens and other soup kitchens across Edinburgh are closing, the demand for GCP's services has never been greater. This buzzing social enterprise approaches community problems with innovation and creativity. Both their Coffee Saints cafés and Tartan Shop reinvest in the community project, as well as spreading the word of their incredible achievements.

In May 2026, as I graduate and cross the marathon finish line, this fundraiser will help ensure the GCP can continue being there for our most vulnerable neighbours in the city.

In the meantime, please follow along on my training journey and volunteering activities!
