Story
We are fundraising for RABI (the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution) in memory of my dad, Edward. This campaign, Edward's Way, is how we are honouring him, and making sure other farming families get the support he quietly gave to so many others.
Me, and 5 other friends and family will be aiming to run the Cotswold Way, 102 miles, in under 24 hours. A huge thank you to James, Emily, Bert, Kate and Rosie for joining me on this crazy challenge!
My dad was the pillar of our community. He had this way of turning a community into a family, through years of quiet loyalty, showing up for people, and never making a big deal of it. He was strong, quietly kind, and deeply loving.
Farming can be an isolating life, even when you're surrounded by people. Long hours, financial pressure, and the weight of carrying on something that's often been in the family for generations, it all adds up. Too many farmers carry it alone, and RABI exists for exactly that reason, offering farming families practical, financial, and emotional support when things get hard.
This is also about grief. Losing my dad changed everything for me, and I know I'm not the only one, in any community, carrying that kind of loss. If Edward's Way helps even one person feel less alone in their grief, or reminds someone it's okay to ask for help, then it has done what I hoped for.
Farmers deliver an essential service, producing food for the nation, yet farming can be an isolating and challenging life, even after retiring. RABI's goal is that no one from the farming community should face adversity alone.
Their support is tailored to the individual, offering free counselling and practical and financial support to farming people. Grant programmes and emergency support help people through a crisis, and regional support managers provide practical advice, a friendly face, and a listening ear when things are tough.
