Story

In March, I’ll be taking part in The Archie Foundation’s Marathon March to raise money for a charity that truly carried us through one of the hardest times of our lives.

Shortly after birth our wee boy Seumas was diagnosed with a rare condition affecting around 1 in 5,000 children. This led to long hospital stays, complications and multiple surgeries at Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital. Being almost 4 hours away from home, we were suddenly faced with the reality of needing somewhere to stay while our baby was in hospital.

Thanks to The Archie Foundation, we were given that lifeline.

They provided us with accommodation right at the hospital. Each night we rotated who stayed with our baby and who rested in Archie’s family accommodation. In total, we spent 82 nights there. We had access to a shared kitchen to make proper meals, washing facilities so we always had clean clothes for ourselves and our baby, and space where Seumas’ older brother could visit and even stay overnight with us - something that meant the world to our whole family.

A special mention to Gillian, who manages the family centre. She was always there for a chat, a listening ear, and a safe space to let everything out. Nothing was ever too much or a bother - such a genuinely kind and caring person. Without these services, we honestly would have been completely lost.

The Archie Foundation also funds one of the play workers on our ward, Orla, who was incredible. Even though Seumas was very little, she always had age-appropriate toys to support his development and bring moments of normality into a hospital setting. She also made us the most beautiful keepsakes and handmade gifts that we’ll treasure forever.

We owe so, so much to The Archie Foundation for everything they’ve done for our family. This challenge is my small way of giving back, so they can continue to support other families when they need it most.

If you’re able to donate or share this page, it would mean more than I can put into words.

Thank you💙
