Fisher House is the home away from home for military patients and their families, based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
A group of 14 British military personnel from the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine and Joint Hospital Group North will participate in the 107th International Four Day Marches in Nijmegen. They aim to raise funds for Fisher House UK, a charity appeal supporting Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
The team comprises members from Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), where many injured service personnel have received treatment, with some undergoing rehabilitation at DMRC Stanford Hall. Patients and their families at QEHB can stay at Fisher House, receiving support from the dedicated house staff and Defence Medical Welfare Services. This facility offers a "home away from home" just a short walk from the hospital wards. Over the past three years, more than 2000 individuals have stayed at Fisher House, totaling over 11,000 nights of accommodation.
Having completed numerous operational tours and deployments, the team members have had fulfilling careers. Unfortunately, many other service personnel have experienced life-altering injuries while serving their country. Fisher House, funded entirely by QEHB Charity, relies on public donations to support military families.
The Nijmegen Marches span 100 miles across four days during the summer, with participants carrying a minimum of 15 kg of equipment. This event is the largest civilian and military march globally, attracting over 50,000 civilian walkers and 8,000 military marchers from around the world. With over 2 million visitors, the event creates a unique and special atmosphere, celebrating its 107th edition as 'The Walk of the World'.
The team has undergone rigorous training and qualified through the UK 50-mile event. Stay tuned for updates on their journey during the '107th Vierdaagse'. Any contributions in support of Fisher House will be greatly appreciated. A heartfelt thank you from Team RCDM: Gez, Mac, Mark, Leonna, Mollie, Alex, Carla, Cerys, Dawn, Melissa, Elaine , Stephanie, Sam, and Molly.
