Story
I am the National President of the SVP, and next year we are fundraising by walking the Camino de Santiago.
The Camino de Santiago translates to the “Way of St James”. It is a network of pilgrims ways leading to the shrine of the apostle James in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
St. James the Apostle was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. Spanish legends holds that St James had spent time preaching the gospel in Spain, but returned to Judea upon seeing a vision of the Virgin Mary on the bank of the Ebro river (Spain). Tradition holds that St James’s remains were carried by boat from Jerusalem to northern Spain, where he was buried.
The Camino network was created and established in the beginning of the 9th century, following the discovery of the relics of the apostle, Saint James the Great. The Way of St. James became a major pilgrimage route of medieval Christianity from the 10th Century onwards.
Today, nearly half a million people walk the Camino de Santiago each year!
