Charity Horse Race · 12 July 2024

Representing a spirit of dynamic 'hands on' conservation. We partner with local wildlife authorities to restore degraded wildlife areas, enhance African wildlife conservation, reverse the decline of endangered species and invest in adjacent communities to promote the benefits of active conservation.

Story

Racing down the straight mile at Ascot has always been a dream of mine. I'm thrilled to share that I will be competing in my first-ever charity horse race! The excitement is palpable, but so is the challenge of raising £5,000 for a fantastic cause: The George Adamson Wildlife Preservation Trust (GAWPT).

Founded in 1979, GAWPT is dedicated to conserving endangered species and restoring natural ecosystems in East Africa. From 1989 to 2020, the Trust partnered with the Tanzanian Government to transform the 3,270 sq km Mkomazi Game Reserve into one of the largest protected ecosystems in Africa. Their efforts included constructing 800 miles of roads, de-silting dams, installing electricity, and drilling for water. This extensive work led to a significant increase in the elephant population, from just 11 in 1989 to over 600 by 2020. In 2019, the Tanzanian Government took over the reserve’s management, allowing GAWPT to focus on rehabilitating Kora National Park in Kenya.

Kora National Park has faced severe challenges, including uncontrolled grazing, poaching, and deforestation for charcoal. GAWPT is collaborating with Kenyan Wildlife Services (KWS) and the Trust for African Schools (TAS) to restore this critical habitat. Their efforts are not just about environmental conservation but also about supporting local communities. They are improving infrastructure, enhancing educational facilities, and ensuring a safe learning environment for children by constructing secure fences and gated entrances around schools.
