The Electric Cranks Cycling Club are a unique group of individuals who have either had a life-saving 'left ventricular assist device' (LVAD) or heart transplant surgery.
Despite facing significant challenges the members of this group have come together with a shared passion for cycling, mutual self-help (physical and psychological support), a desire to raise awareness of 'severe heart failure' and to give back to the community through fundraising for the 'New Start Charity : The Wythenshawe Hospital Transplant Fund' - and generally put a smile on people's faces
In June 2025 the Electric Cranks will be cycling along the Northumberland Coast (from Berwick-upon-Tweed to The Freeman Hospital 'Institute of Transplantation', over three days, hoping to make even more people aware of cardiac failure and organ donation, as well as some fundraising.
In previous years the Electric Cranks have undertaken similar multi-day cycling challenges, using pedal-assist e-bikes, including :
2024 - the North Wales coast from South Stack Anglesey to Chester.
2023 - the Coast to Coast route from Grange-over-Sands over the Pennines to Sunderland, joined along the route by the BBC Countryfile team and presenter Joe Crowley, and featuring in the ‘Cycling in the Countryside’ episode which aired on 16th July.
2022 - the Coast to Coast route from Bowness on Solway to South Shields along the course of Hadrian’s Wall, incidentally exactly 1900 years after it was first completed.
Our efforts, and especially our distinctive purple mohicans, are widely considered inspiring, always greatly supported, and much appreciated by Abbott Cardiovascular, the manufacturers of these incredible life preserving LVAD HeartMate III devices.
