Story
Always looking to push the boundaries of ‘human endurance’ - 2 intrepid Electric Cranks (Luca & Chris L - with support driver Chris M) are challenging themselves to complete the infamous ‘Sarn Helen’ off-road cycle trail from North to South Wales during the first week in July (potentially 270 miles over 5 days) - starting on 30th June. Postponed from last year when Luca received his ‘donor heart’ we all wish them well - and hope that folk might like to sponsor them - via JustGiving - to provide some additional incentive and invaluable fundraising support for NewStart Charity.
And a big ‘shout-out’ to support riders 🚴🏼🚴♂️ (Daryl & Vince) who are accompanying them all the way.

During the first week of June 2026 the ElectricCranks, some ‘Honorary Cranks' and senior representatives from Abbott (the American multinational medical devices and health care company, the manufacturers of our HeartMate III LVAD devices), set off from the Golden Jubilee Hospital (Clydebank), near Glasgow on the west coast, to cycle over three days to Dunbar on the east coast of Scotland. Resplendent in our distinctive purple 'Mohicans' the journey took us from the Hospital along the Forth & Clyde Canal (Route 754) and the John Muir Way to Dunbar Castle & Harbour. We celebrated World Cycling Day in Edinburgh on Wednesday 3rd June.
Highlights of the trip included the Silvanus sculpture, Falkirk Wheel, the Kelpies, Edinburgh Old Town, the Musselburgh Shell and John White ⚽️memorial.
So it was very much a case of “Through the combined wonders of technology and medical science ‘E-humans riding pedal-assist e-bikes’ are able to demonstrate how the combination of E-power and Vitamin Nature can transform lives!”

In June 2025 we headed back to North East of England to cycle over three days from the Scottish border at Berwick-on-Tweed to the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Once again we sought to bring more clarity and awareness of vital organ donation, heart transplantation, and demonstrate the potential to thrive while living with a left ventricular assist device.

In June 2024 the ElectricCranks cycled along the North Wales coast from South Stack Anglesey to Chester over three days making even more people aware of cardiac failure, organ donation and fundraising for New Start Charity Wythenshawe Hospital.

In June 2023 the ElectricCranks cycled for three days from Grange-over-Sands over the Pennines to Sunderland to complete our second coast to coast ride fundraising for New Start Charity Wythenshawe Hospital. We were joined along the route by the BBC Countryfile team with presenter Joe Crowley and featured in their ‘Cycling in the countryside’ episode aired on 16th July. It was available on BBC iPlayer but is now some way down in our Facebook feed.

In June 2022 Bob, Ian & Peter cycled from Bowness on Solway to South Shields along the course of Hadrian’s Wall, incidentally exactly 1900 years after it was first completed. Due to unforeseen illness Ged & Chris had to postpone their involvement and cycled the route later that year in September.
Our efforts are always greatly supported and much appreciated by Abbott Laboratories, the American multinational medical devices and health care company and makers of the LVAD HeartMate III.
