Team Cycle Chai is raising money for Jewish Care

18km cycle

Jewish Care is the largest health & social care charity for the UK Jewish community, helping 12,000 people weekly. We help older people, people with disabilities, mental health needs, visual impairment, Holocaust survivors & refugees. We also help families & carers & run youth programmes.

Story

We’re Team Cycle Chai - Elise, Bea, Alyssa, Eliana, Ella Go, Ella Gr, Libby, Sadie, Ione, Daniella G and Daniella W - a group of 11 Year 7 Batmitzvah girls - with some amazing friends Emmy, Elena, Jaya and Liana on a mission to raise money in support of Jewish Care’s Holocaust Survivors Centre and Meals on Wheels Service.

The Holocaust Survivors centre is the only centre in the UK designed specifically for Holocaust survivors. Around 500 survivors are supported at the centre which provides social, cultural, and therapeutic events. They host monthly Shabbat dinners, weekly challah deliveries, entertainment and outings. They also provide counselling sessions and trauma support as well as other activities relating to holocaust education - something very important in today’s world. Many survivors consider the centre a “home” where they can share experiences with those who understand what they have been through.

This challenge is especially meaningful to us because it’s part of marking our Batmitzvah year. In Jewish tradition becoming bat mitzvah (at age 12) is not only a celebration, but also the moment we take on new responsibilities. One important custom is to give back through tzedakah (charity) and to take on a mitzvah project - an act of kindness that helps others. This year as we grow into Jewish adulthood, we are inspired by the strength and resilience of the Holocaust survivors. Their courage teaches us lessons of perseverance, hope, and the importance of community - all values we want to carry with us into this next stage of life.

We will be cycling 18 km on Sunday 12th October because 18 is a symbolic number in Jewish tradition, representing chai (life). Through this fundraiser, we will all be able to make meaningful differences to the lives of those who rely on these vital services. The centre can be the only interaction some survivors have with people each week.

We’d love your support on this journey - every contribution brings us closer to our goal and helps us honour the tradition of starting Jewish adulthood with generosity and care.
