Story
On the 16th of May our family and friends will be walking 17 miles across London football terraces in memory of our beloved Zach. Our route takes us from Tottenham hotspur, past Arsenal, Chelsea, and Brentford, and finishes at Fulham, the club Zach loved so deeply and where he proudly held a season ticket.
Zach spent three years bravely fighting a very rare form of Leukemia. During that time he endured grueling treatment, including two bone marrow transplants and numerous rounds of chemotherapy. He also developed cord colitis, which meant he was unable to eat or drink for nearly a year and relied on his Hickman line through which he received vital nutrition and fluids, both at home and in hospital.
When we knew we were approaching palliative care, we were transferred to Helen & Douglas House- first supported at home by their incredible outreach Team, and later, in Zach's final days, at the hospice in Oxford.
We arrived just two days before christmas 2024, exhausted frightened, and unsure of what to expect. But the moment the doors opened, something shifted. The air felt softer, warmer, lighter. Helen & Douglas House is not just a building,it is a place filled with moments, kindness, and dignity.
There care didn't just mean medicine. It meant we were able to become Mum, Dad, and Brother again, instead of nurses and carers. It felt like the four of us were wrapped in a blanket of compassion, love, and care. The staff held our hands in both the joyful and the heartbreaking moments. They helped make our final Christmas together as a family of four as special and gentle as possible.
Helen & Douglas House is not just about endings, it is about helping families live fully, bravely, and tenderly in every moment that matters.
As a family, we were deeply grateful for the love and care we received and continue to receive. By fundraising, we want not only to honour Zach's memory but to ensure that other families can experience the same compassion, support, and dignity through their own unimaginable journeys.
💛How Your Donation Helps
Every donation, no matter the size, makes a real and immediate difference to the children and families supported by Helen & Douglas House.
