Story
Our BBC team of runners will be taking part in the Hull 10K in June in memory of our much-loved and missed news editor, Kate, who passed away in 2023 after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Kate gave many of us our first opportunities at the BBC and was the kind of colleague who supported, encouraged and celebrated the success of others... and we’ll be thinking of her as we run the 10k.
From Kate’s family:
We as a family are delighted that Kate's colleagues are remembering her in this way. Kate would never say she was a runner but say that she enjoyed it (always after the run!). Kate would say well done to every one of you no matter how quick or steady (not slow!) you are on the day.
Kate wanted a greater awareness of Pancreatic Cancer made as its symptoms are common to many minor things that you might not want to bother the doctor with initially. Kate also wished that money could be raised for research as PC usually has a devastating outcome. More often that not there is a late diagnosis and at the moment there is no early 'easy' effective test or widespread screening.
These are some of the facts from Pancreatic Cancer UK and Cancer Research UK and some hope for the future:
-Symptoms include indigestion, pain in your tummy or back, changes to your poo, losing weight without meaning to and jaundice.
-Around 30 people a day in the UK are diagnosed and die from Pancreatic Cancer. It is the 10th most common cancer in the UK but the 5th most common cause of cancer death.
-Pancreatic Cancer UK have various research projects that need funding, these include developing a breath test for early detection. This was one of their objectives as the partner charity for the 2025 London Marathon.
