Story

Welcome to my Berkhamsted Castle moat path marathon fundraising page! I'm walking 26.2 miles to help protect the historic Castle Fields from the threat of development and keep them publicly open and available for the local community.

I’ve lived in Berkhamsted for 20 years, not far from Berkhamsted Castle where the crown of England was surrendered to William of Normandy in 1066 following the battle of Hastings. He then marched from Berkhamsted to Westminster Abbey, a distance of approximately 26 miles, where he was actually crowned.

The open fields (Castle Fields) adjacent to the castle are also historically important, being the site of a key battle in 1216 when the French Prince Louis fought in support of the English barons to force the King of England to accept the Magna Carta and the rule of law.

Over the past few hundred years these fields have been an unofficial public green space, where local people have enjoyed the footpaths and open hillsides. But more recently the landowner tried to sell the fields to a commercial developer.

With the help of a £500,000 loan from a former local resident, Berkhamsted Castle Trust charity was able to step in and buy the fields on behalf of the community. BUT, the loan must now be repaid. Local fundraising has gotten off to a good start with more than £150,000 raised so far.

I want to help save the fields for the community by raising funds with my Berkhamsted Castle moat path marathon.

Over several days in early June, I’ll be walking 26.2 miles (roughly the distance from Berkhamsted to Westminster where William was crowned in 1066) by doing laps of the path around the moat at Berkhamsted Castle. One lap of the path is about 1066 steps (just under half a mile) so I’ll be doing 60 laps of the path.

Please donate to my historic moat path marathon fundraiser and help save Castle Fields for the local community. Thank you for your support!
