Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit myJustGiving page.

Next April, I will be running the London Marathon in support of a cause that’s very close to my heart – Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.

Moorfields has provided exceptional care for my youngest sister, Annie, throughout her life.

Annie, now 25, was diagnosed with a severe form of glaucoma at just three months old. Thanks to successful trabeculectomy surgeries at Moorfields and numerous anti-scarring treatments during her early years, her vision was preserved. Along with regular eye drops, her eye pressure remained well-controlled until her teenage years. In 2018, Annie underwent a tiny aqueous shunt operation, a procedure that was repeated in October 2024 with remarkable advancements. The tube, measuring just 0.71 microns, is almost invisible to the naked eye – a testament to the huge strides made in this procedure in just six years.

We are ever grateful to consultants Chris Scott and Manjula Kumarasamy in Aberdeen and Sir Peng Khaw in London for their expertise and continuity in care. Prof Khaw performed Annie’s first operation in 2001, many more smaller procedures over the following years and her recent surgery in October 2024.

Moorfields is not just a treatment centre; it is also a world-renowned research hub. Through a collaboration between Moorfields NHS, the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, and Moorfields Eye Charity, the Oriel Centre is being built in St Pancras, Camden. This state-of-the-art facility will be a global leader in eye care and research, creating an environment where innovation and collaboration can thrive. The Oriel Centre will accelerate breakthroughs in eye care and treatment, improving lives at Moorfields and beyond.

By donating, you can make a real difference for those experiencing sight loss. Your support will help fund vital research, provide sight-saving equipment, and educate the next generation of eye care specialists.
