Ellie's fundraiser for Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity

Ellie B is raising money for Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity

Thames Path Ultra Challenge 2023 · 9 September 2023 to 10 September 2023 ·

The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity is the principle charity of the Royal Navy. Beneficiaries lie at the heart of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity's purpose, it is our duty to remain focused on their needs. Since 2007, we have funded projects and facilities that boost morale for those who serve today. We also distribute millions of pounds annually to military charities which care for the children, families and veterans of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

100km continuous, my furthest distance yet by twice the distance!

In July 2021 while away on a training course I suffered a tri-malleolar fracture with talar shift (a break in 3 places and a dislocation) in my ankle. Following this I spent 5 days in hospital during which I had surgery to insert a plate, bolts and screws to ensure the bones set in the correct locations and improve stability while healing, no-one knew if I'd ever walk again without a limp.

At 6 weeks the cast was removed and I was given a boot to slowly start to weight bear again. A week later the physiotherapist had me learning to walk without a boot again, not long after that I was out of the boot and off the crutches completely, I couldn’t have done this without the support I got from the physiotherapists in the MoD, I was able to have 4 sessions a week and constantly pushed to keep improving. The support I got throughout was so important not just physically but mentally as well, I never felt let down or alone through this process and I think that was a massive factor. I truly believe recovery is as much about your mental state as your physical one.

I am fundraising for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity as I want to give something back and I truly believe in what they do and the difference it makes to so many peoples lives. This process made me truly aware of how important support is and how much of a difference it can make and I now want to give back so that others can get support and guidance when needed, whether they are serving, veterans or families of Royal Navy and Marine personnel, at home or deployed. They don't only support individuals but also larger needs to help integrate communities
