Story
In March 2023 my mum was diagnosed with Stage 4 Kidney Cancer. After 18 months receiving several different treatments, mum made the decision to stop all treatment due to the harsh side effects that were diminishing her quality of life.
Myself and my now husband Harison decided that Mum would come and live with us in our home in Oxfordshire in order to care for her in an environment she was comfortable with. With mum being cared for in Cambridgeshire, this was a challenge in itself. However she was able to come home from Addenbrookes to be with us full time.
As soon as mum arrived with us, Sobell were amazing. Despite mum being cared for at home, she was also under their care, meaning they managed her medications, dr visits and helped guide myself and Harison through caring for someone in the finals stages of their life.
We had an amazing member of the Sobell team, Claire, who was our dedicated point of contact. Once they knew mum had arrived with us, she came and visited us to help with what the next steps would be and how Sobell would help in any way they could.
Claire organised for a district nurse to visit every day to administer medication. She also arranged carers to come and help me with mum 4 times a day. And during mums final few days, which were extremely tricky and unpredictable, they were there just a phone call away, caring not only for mum but also myself and helping me through each tough day.
Mum passed away on the 16th November 2024.
Without the help of Sobell, she would not have been able to pass away at our home, where she wanted to be, surrounded by family members and the people that loved her the most. I would not have been able to commit to caring for her without their help and guidance and unwavering support.
Despite their care being so short with mum, I will forever be grateful for what they did for us as a family and how they impacted mums last few weeks of her life in such a positive way.
8 months on and Sobell have not left. They now provide me with bereavement support every few weeks, which has made it easier for me to grieve and navigate a world without mum in it. I have a dedicated support worker who is there for as long as I need them.
None of this is possible without donations. I am raising money for Sobell to say thank you for their incredible support and also to remember my amazing mum who was my absolute hero.
I know she will be cheering me on every step of the way.
Thank you🤍
