Story
This year I’m running the London Marathon to raise money for Women In Tri UK — a community that has genuinely changed my life ✨
Women in Tri UK is a volunteer-led charity dedicated to breaking down barriers for women in swim, bike, run, and triathlon. They believe that every woman—regardless of background, ability, or financial situation—should have the opportunity to experience the mental and physical benefits of these sports. It creates a safe and encouraging space where women of all abilities and backgrounds can try something new, challenge themselves, and build friendships along the way.
For many women, including myself, taking part in sport can feel intimidating or inaccessible. WIT provide financial support, mentorship, coaching, and community initiatives to help more women take part. They also work with race organisers and governing bodies to advocate for fairer, more inclusive policies that make the sport accessible to all.
Being part of this community has given me opportunities, encouragement and friendships that I wouldn’t have found elsewhere. Running the London Marathon is my way of giving something back and helping more women experience the same support and confidence that I’ve been lucky enough to find.
In the last year, I have pushed myself out of my comfort zone, in ways I really still cant believe I've done. WIT has helped me:
- Learn how to open water swim, something that I still get quite frightened about. Knowing I'm not alone in the water and having a coach provide calming techniques has helped to take away some of the fear and enabled me to "just keep swimming!". To push myself a little more, WIT offered me the opportunity to race the 2-mile loop in Swim Serpentine!
- Gain more independence by providing subsidised bike mechanic course. No more emergency “how do I” phone calls to my dad!
- Meet inspiring and strong women. My favourite part of the community is how we all come together to help and support one another. No question is too silly, no one is too new/elite, no one is left behind and every need is considered. Not every training session or race goes to plan, having the support network has been a godsend! There's nothing more special than turning up to an event alone and having people recognise you from the community and give you a boost! My first triathlon last year got off to an AWFUL start, a lovely lady in WIT picked me up like an F1 pitstop, gave me a pep talk and got me organised & ready to go in 20 minutes - without them, I honestly wouldn't have done it.
- Most importantly, the community has helped me to believe in myself and help me to see what I can be capable of! Something I feel a lot of women keep locked up.
As most of my nearest and dearest know, I love a half. But a marathon?! A whole other level... Am I nervous? YES. But do I think I'm capable? 100%. I'm going to smile, laugh and eat all the Percy Pigs to get me across the line... even if I have to waddle the last few km's!
If you’re able to donate, any amount will help Women In Tri continue creating opportunities for more women to get involved in sport and feel part of something empowering.
If you've got to the end - DO MORE THINGS THAT SCARE YOU!! There's a lot of potential in you and a community that will have your back every step of the way!
Thank you SO much for your support 💛
