Story
I’m heading to the Arctic!
In January I’ll be taking on the Arctic Challenge to raise money for the National Literacy Trust, and it’s no small feat.
For four freezing days in temperatures as low as -35°C, I’ll be pushing myself to the limit across the Arctic tundra. There will be no sunrise, just a few hours of twilight and darkness as I hike, dog sled, and ice fish through snow and across frozen lakes.
And here’s the twist: I hate the cold.
But I’m doing this because I believe every child deserves the chance to thrive and that begins with literacy. The National Literacy Trust works with children in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the UK, helping to close the opportunity gap that begins before they even step into a classroom.
Growing up, reading was a lifeline for me. My school and local libraries opened doors to new worlds and I want to help give that same gift to others.
Right now, children from the poorest backgrounds start school 19 months behind their peers. Without strong literacy skills, they’re:
- 5 times more likely to fall behind in English by age 11
- 4 times more likely to be unemployed at 34
- 3 times more likely to struggle with mental health as adults
That’s not just unfair, it’s unacceptable.
So I’m braving the Arctic to help change that. If you’re able to support me, I’d be so grateful. Every donation makes a real difference.
Thank you!
