EMERGE Overview
EMERGE (The ERG Community) is a cross-industry community of race diversity and black employee networks, who unite as staff network leads and chairs to collaborate, share best practices and create community driven initiatives that support black professionals in corporate settings.
What We Are Doing
We are coming together to fundraise to support blood donation charities and encourage blood donations from the community to help alleviate the daily pain experienced by those with sickle cell
50% of the money raised will benefit ACLT Registered Charity Number 1119516 and 50% of the money raised will support the work of the NHS Blood and Transplant Charity, Registered Charity Number 1061771.
We will also be holding an awareness event in July focusing on sharing the stories and experiences of sickle cell warriors in the corporate workplace to raise awareness and demystify some of the negative stereotypes around sickle cell
Why Sickle Cell
Sickle cell disease is the UK’s fastest growing genetic disorder and is described as a group of inherited health conditions that affect the red blood cells with the most serious type being sickle cell anaemia .
We noticed a growing number of members of the community either have sickle cell or have family members or colleagues with sickle cell
In the workplace, despite being a chronic condition, Sickle Cell disease is still not legally recognised as a disability holistically.
A survey by Novartis, highlighted the impacts of sickle cell on work productivity and progression as
- 74% of sickle cell sufferers have seriously considered reducing their hours at work
- 61% of sickle cell sufferers have considered terminating their job due to the challenges of managing sickle cell and employment
- 58% of sickle cell sufferers have reported that having sickle cell has limited them to certain careers
The NHS Blood and Transplant Charity Fund
The NHS Blood and Transplant Charity Fund uses donations from donors, patients and the public to save and improve lives. Donations to the charity can be used to develop new therapies, improve our donation services and undertake groundbreaking research so we can continue to innovate in saving lives.
ACLT
The African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT) is a lifesaving charity dedicated to diversifying stem cell (bone marrow), blood and organ donor registers by recruiting new donors, particularly from African and Caribbean communities, who are critically underrepresented. A matched donor from the same ethnic background can significantly improve treatment outcomes. The ACLT provides hope to patients living with blood cancer and blood related illnesses and is driven by a belief that no one should die waiting for a donor to become available.
