Story
In April, I will be taking on the challenge of running 26.2 miles at the London Marathon. My run club (Mornington Chasers) kindly gave me one of their community marathon places, and I thought what better way to express my gratitude than use the opportunity to raise money for a good cause.
I have chosen to support Museum of Homelessness. One in 45 Londoners are experiencing homelessness and this number is increasing. People experiencing homelessness are an extremely vulnerable group, facing an increased risk of liver disease, violence and mental health issues. Women are particularly affected, and are 12 times more likely to die prematurely than the general population (average life expectancy 43 years). In the UK in 2024, 1611 people died experiencing homelessness, including 11 children (likely an underestimate), an increase of 9% compared to 2023.
My work in viral hepatitis research, and with the Find & Treat team at University College London Hospital who provide outreach health and infection screening to people experiencing homelessness, brought into focus for me the essential role that third sector services and charities have in providing support to the homeless community.
Museum of homelessness is a small charity with a big impact. Based in Finsbury Park (just down the road from me), they provide practical support to the homeless community in North London, including hot meals, essential supplies such as sleeping bags and socks, paid employment, and mentoring, development and funding for artists. In 2024, their campaigning through the project “Dying Homeless” resulted in the government providing £10 million for additional winter shelter.
I am honoured to run the marathon in support of Museum of Homelessness. Please considere donating, even just a small amount, to help the team continue doing their great work!
