Lizzie and Emily met in May 2017 on a charity challenge - to climb the four highest peaks in the Lake District. Six plus years of friendship later, we’ve been mad enough to sign up for the next-level TWENTY-FOUR PEAKS challenge. Why in the name of sanity would we do such a thing??
Emily's story:
I signed up the first time in memory of my oldest best friend Laura, who died of breast cancer in 2016. In 2022, I too was diagnosed with breast cancer. Thankfully, this was of the treatable variety so, now that I've finished the chemo, the surgery and the radio (although breast cancer treatment seems to be neverending), I want to give something back, get back in shape and raise money for Laura’s preferred charity - Breast Cancer Now, the existence of which is one of the reasons that I am still here to plan another bonkers charity challenge in the first place.
Lizzie's story:
After meeting Emily during our first hiking challenge, we have become firm friends - walking regularly when I lived in London, generally mucking about and having fun. Cancer is going to impact us all...but when it happens to your close friends it is always a horrible shock. Emily handled her diagnosis amazingly and ploughed on with life, work and walking as best she could during the brutal treatment. This is a celebration of her getting to the other side of that, and of our friendship and an opportunity to really test ourselves for an amazing cause.
So we have decided to revisit the Lakes but this time to take on 24 peaks in 24 hours. Yes, the pair of us who hate uphill and downhill-ness are going to do well over 12500 feet of ascent and approx 24 miles over some of the Lake Districts' pointiest peaks. In two days.
Training began in earnest in January with some of Norfolks highest peaks (haha!) and ends in September with the big challenge. We are raising money for Breast Cancer Now. The reason is obvious. Please, if you can, spare some money to spur us on and support this fantastic cause.
