Story

Hello, wonderful people!

I never in a million years imagined I’d say this, but in April 2026, I’m running the London Marathon! Why would anyone run 26.2 miles if they’re not being forced to?! Here’s why…

Last year, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I don’t mind admitting this was a massive shock. In those first few and uncertain days, MacMillan Cancer Support was there with compassion and advice when I needed someone impartial to listen to my worries and fears. Their support helped me accept and come to terms with my diagnosis.

Since then, I’ve had surgery, radiotherapy, and will take medication for five years to reduce the risk of it coming back. Thanks to early detection and the incredible care from the Primrose Breast Care Unit in Plymouth, I now thankfully have no evidence of disease.

While there are no guarantees, research shows regular physical activity can reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence by 20-30%. It is also proven to help people to manage some of the side effects of cancer treatments both physical and mental. Because of this, exercise, especially running, has become a huge part of my ongoing recovery. And, if you’re going to run, why not go large and run the London Marathon?!

I’m so grateful to be part of Team MacMillan, raising funds for a charity that supported me and has so many others. I’m not fast, my technique is questionable, and I make some interesting faces when I run, but I am determined. Every single step of those 26.2 miles will be to raise funds for MacMillan and also, on a personal level, feels like the ultimate way of proving I have recovered and a happy and healthy life after cancer is possible.

You never know when you might need MacMillan, but you can be sure they’ll be there if you do. So, please, friends and family, colleagues and companions, I would be very grateful if you would donate if you can. It doesn’t matter how much, any amount is appreciated and makes a difference to support this charity to continue their invaluable work. In return for your generosity I promise to give it my all.

One last thing… please check your boobs!
