Lucas’ Story

It’s that time of year again where Lucas hopes to raise awareness (& funds!) of his rare blood condition; Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency (PKD).

Since last year’s epic fundraiser most people know that unfortunately Lucas experienced an aplastic crisis in May 2024 after catching parvovirus. CAN and Lucas’ early diagnosis doctors had raised our awareness of the risks of this common childhood virus so we knew to act quickly when realising he had caught it.

We hadn’t actually appreciated quite how sick, or how quickly, he would get seriously ill. CAN were on hand (via Whatsapp!) to give additional guidance and support which is absolutely invaluable when the doctors providing the immediately treatment and hospital care knew very little about PKD and were learning from us!

This year is slightly different as we’d really like to encourage you all to walk WITH us on the 1st March; either in person or virtually by heading out for a stroll, hike or trek from 10.30am locally to you. Please either set up your own fundraising page (just message Emma for details how to do this), or encourage your sponsors to send a donation via this link.

Lucas would obviously LOVE to meet last year’s target but we appreciate any support you can give and even just spreading the word and awareness is truly valuable.
