Story
Helen introduced me to open water swimming and we are doubling our swim distance to raise funds for the charity I work for called Small Steps.
I will be swimming 1km and Helen 1.5km. This is both a physical and mental challenge for us both. We will need to double our fitness and keep our nerve whilst swimming the longest we ever have in open water - weather permitting on Friday 21st August 2026 at Quayswim, Surrey.
Small Steps helps children with physical disabilities, aged from birth to 5 years, work on all areas of their development, using the principles of conductive education delivered by conductors, therapists and assistants. Children have cerebral palsy, genetic syndromes or other forms of movement challenges and require a high level of additional input to help them meet their potential.
The focus at Small Steps is very much on the positive; what children can and will achieve, with parents benefiting from the mutual support of shared experiences, on the emotional journey of having a disabled child. The work of Small Steps is a lifeline to families and sessions are 100% free to remain accessible to all. The charity receives no statutory funding, so is solely dependent on charitable grants, fundraising and donations.
As a Practitioner (Occupational Therapist) at Small Steps, I believe every child has the right to meet their potential, participate in life to the best of their ability and lead a happy, fulfilling life. The work of Small Steps is crucial to children achieving this.
Helen and I would be extremely grateful for your support for this very worthy cause, helping Small Steps continue their amazing work. Thank you.
