Imagine not being able to read? There are £2.4 million or 7% of the working population who can barely read or cannot read at all.
It is no exaggeration to say that learning to read can be simply transformational. It enables an adult to get a better job, read to their children, read important correspondence (health, finance and more) and have more control over their lives. Not to mention discover the joy of reading for pleasure!
I am a proud trustee of Read Easy Southwark which provides one-to-one reading coaching for adults. The one-to-one approach is labour intensive, but key to the success of the programme.
I turned 60 this year, and could think of no better way to celebrate than running the Great North Run to enable 6 more adults to learn to read with our fabulous coaches. My goal is to raise £1,500 and if I raise more money, more adults can learn to read.
Coaching a new reader costs £245 a year and we currently have 35 reader/coach pairs working away.
Deshaun completed the programme recently (congratulations Deshaun!) with his wonderful coach, Charlotte. A talented knitter, he wanted to learn to read to develop his knitting business. Charlotte said:
working one-to-one and at his own pace was key to Deshaun's progress and success. Seeing him discover the confidence to try reading anything has been hugely rewarding
