Emma's Fundraiser: Help Me Support RCLC – London Marathon 2025!

Emma Diaz is raising money for Reading Community Learning Centre (RCLC)

London Marathon 2025 · 27 April 2025 ·

Based in Central Reading, RCLC has been operating as an independent charity since 2007, and before that as part of the national charity, Workers’ Education Association, since the mid-1990s. We have over 20 years of experience in delivering services to support traditionally ‘hard-to-reach’ refugee and migrant women to be skilled, confident, and active citizens who are able to contribute to society by addressing barriers to learning, integration and employment. Many of the refugee and migrant women we support speak little or no English, and often have limited experience outside of the home; as a result, many are amongst the most isolated, deprived and vulnerable members of our community. To support women at our Centre, we offer a programme of outreach activities, free training classes, workshops, 1:1 information, advice and guidance, a Crèche and social opportunities which are designed to build confidence, increase skills and reduce social isolation. Our model encourages integration, community cohesion and breaking down barriers between cultures. In 2020-21, we supported over 300 women from 30 different countries of origin. No other service in Reading reaches such a diverse group of women, giving us a unique insight into the needs of local refugee and migrant communities.

Story

I am thrilled to share that I was lucky enough to secure a ballot place in the London Marathon 2025! This incredible opportunity is more than just a personal challenge – I want to use it to make a difference by raising funds for Reading Community Learning Centre (RCLC).

RCLC is a small but mighty charity that does incredible work supporting women from migrant and refugee backgrounds. They provide vital education, language skills, and social opportunities to help women feel empowered and integrated into the community. Small charities like RCLC don’t always get the same level of funding as larger organizations, but their impact is truly life changing. I am passionate about Education and Development so when one of my Yr13 tutees shared that her mum is the Centre manager, I was keen to find out more. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to visit the charity and was so impressed with the dedicated and enthusiastic staff, the inspiring atmosphere and the sense of belonging being fostered there for so many women. It was truly inspiring and evidently life-changing for so many women on their individual journeys.

To prepare for London, I've already ran the Wokingham Half Marathon and will be taking on the Reading Half on March 23rd before the big event on April 27th. Training has been challenging, but thanks to the incredible support of fellow runners, RTB Bootcamp and dedicated coach, Kate, I’ve stayed on track. Knowing that I’m running for such a meaningful cause further fuels my motivation every step of the way.

Please consider sponsoring me and helping RCLC continue their important work. Every donation, big or small, will make a real difference in the lives of the women they support.

Thank you so much for your generosity and encouragement – I truly appreciate it!
