Burley Oaks Reception fundraiser for Sue Ryder, Manorlands Hospice and BOPS outdoor play area

Emma Dowson is raising money for Sue Ryder

Sponsored Walk

Sue Ryder is here to make sure everyone approaching the end of their life or living with grief can get the support they need. There is no one size fits all when it comes to how we cope and the help we need, but with our support, no one has to face dying or grief alone. We are there when it matters.

Story

This summer holiday, on Friday 28th August 2026, the Burley Oaks Primary School Reception team will be walking 14 miles from Burley-in -Wharfedale to Burnsall through the Yorkshire Dales, carrying our giant teddy bears every step of the way!

This challenge is about supporting two causes that mean so much to our school community. Half of everything we raise will be donated to Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice, helping to provide outstanding end of life care and support to local families when they need it most. The remaining half will be used to enhance our Reception outdoor learning environment, creating even more opportunities for our youngest children to learn, explore and flourish.

Following on from our Teddy Bears' picnic transition event, the children will be able to follow our journey on our class blog, before they even start school, helping to make those first days feel exciting, familiar and full of confidence.

We hope our walk will make a meaningful difference to both families in our local community and the children beginning their school journey. If you are able to support us with a donation, however big or small, we would be incredibly grateful!
