New Forest Marathon · 10 September 2023

SCRATCH redistributes donated furniture and household items to those in need. In our last full year, ending March 2019 we carried out 1065 deliveries, benefitting 1325 adults and 1003 children. Many of the people we help have experienced homelessness and when allocated a property don’t have the furniture needed to turn an empty shell into a home. Here are a few quotes from people we have recently helped: - “I am amazed at how much furniture I have been given, I am very happy with the service - I had nothing and now I have a lot.” “SCRATCH team, I just want to say how impressed I am with your organisation – I was with a family when furniture was being delivered. Your delivery man was so kind and helpful. Also, the amount and condition of the items given was impressive. The bedding items were so lovely, the children just loved their beds.” “I am so thrilled, everything will fit so well. Can’t believe I now own all this stuff after moving in with nothing”. “I remember how joyed up and buoyed up I was the day SCRATCH delivered my furniture after three months without any. SCRATCH does a fine job in making (people) like me feel like we too might possibly belong to society somehow”.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am running the New Forest Marathon for Copello's chosen charity, SCRATCH.

I am a keen runner, but up until now I have only ever gone as far as a half marathon. The thought on adding an additional 13.1 miles on top of that, is a bit scary...

Following a 16 week training block (commenced on 22nd May), I am aiming for a sub 4 hour time.

I really wanted to do something to push me to my limit, and challenge myself and ultimately, raise as much as possible for a charity that means a lot to me.

About Scratch Charity

We were shocked to find out that 34.7% of children in Southampton currently live in poverty, which is around 16,000. This number is increasing, yet is very rarely talked about.

During one of Copello's volunteering days we learnt about an 8-year old who was so pleased with his newly donated bed, as up until that point, he had slept on the floor using his clothes as a pillow. It is incredibly sad that in such a rich society we still have families living in such poor conditions.

SCRATCH was set up locally to relieve the poverty issue and to provide a care package for families that have very little. The DORCAS project includes a sofa, kettle, toaster, beds, and curtains; a starter kit essentially which costs £170. Unlike bigger charities who have millions in reserve, Scratch always have a budget deficit.

Your donations make all the difference to many lives.
